Het belang van in vitro studies is dat men de potenti\u00eble invloeden van de velden kan isoleren van andere soorten invloeden. Zij hebben echter een groot nadeel: de cellen of weefsels worden aan het natuurlijk milieu onttrokken; complete organismen hebben interactie- en afweermechanismen die bij dit soort proeven haast altijd ontbreken. Bovendien zijn de waarden van de gebruikte velden doorgaans veel hoger dan die van de velden waar de bevolking of de werknemers aan worden blootgesteld. Twee voorbeelden van tests zijn: de Cytome-test en de Comet-test. Andere tests worden ook beschreven in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbemg.uliege.be\/effecten-van-emv-op-keratinocyten\/?lang=nl\">BBEMG resultaten, Effecten van EMV op de keratinocyten<\/a>.[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;De cytome test&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left|color:%233f3f3f&#8221; use_theme_fonts=&#8221;yes&#8221;][vc_column_text]De cytome-test kan als een uitgebreide &#8220;micronucleustest&#8221; worden beschouwd; dit betekent dat cellen in de telofase, net v\u00f3\u00f3r de celdeling, worden geblokkeerd. In deze fase zijn twee hoofdnuclei aanwezig. Bij genotoxiciteit zijn een aantal afwijkingen aanwezig: micronuclei (gebroken chromosoomfragmenten of achterblijvende chromosomen worden waargenomen in de klassieke micronucleustest). Andere morfologische eigenschappen verstrekken bijkomende informatie: nucleaire bruggen (dicentrische chromosomen), nucleaire \u201cbuds\u201d (genamplificatie), trinucleaire cellen (centrosoomafwijking). Wanneer DNA beschadigd is, migreren gebroken fragmenten in het gel naar de positieve pool. Er ontstaat een komeetvormige structuur. De lengte en de intensiteit van de staart kunnen worden gemeten.
